-Albuquerque, NM. -July 20, 2023. The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) held a press conference and provided details on an officer-involved shooting that happened on July 20. At the conference, APD showed officers’ lapel videos from the incident. On July 20, officers were attempting to arrest 20-year-old Emmanuel Galaviz Campos at the Copper Ridge Apartments on Tramway. Police say he had an active arrest warrant in Santa Fe. Police say Campos was also a suspect in a recent Albuquerque homicide. Officials say detectives monitored Campos for several days and saw him enter two different apartment complexes. A SWAT unit was brought in on July 20 to assist in taking Campos into custody at the Copper Ridge Apartments Two people inside complied with SWAT members’ request to leave the apartment. One of them told police her two-year-old son was still inside. As the SWAT team was gaining access to the apartment, police say Campos fired a gun and hit Officer John Holler in his right arm. An NMSP officer was also shot during the incident. APD Officer Zachary Herbst and an unidentified State Police officer shot back. Campos was shot several times and died at the scene. SWAT members, along with APD and New Mexico State Police (NMSP) officers, shot back. They say Campos was shot several times and died at the scene. Following the shooting, SWAT officers found the two-year-old in a bathtub inside the apartment. The boy was taken to his mother. Officer Holler was treated and released from the hospital. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
